Legate Milo Rivet

Milo Rivet grew up on a small backwater planet of the Cardassian Union. Tough his rise to power has been meteoric, the military brilliant Rivet is a very conservative politician: His only goal is a strong Cardassian Union of the old style, ruled by the Central Command, where the military leaders of the Orders decide the policy.

Rivet is a handsome man, known for his intransigence and self-confidence to the point of arrogance. His presence is so imposing and the aura of power around him so intimidating, that even the mightiest persons of the Union trembles when he must come before Legate Rivet.

His military career is legendary - he was promoted during the Federation-Cardassian War to one of the youngest Guls and given command of a brand-new ship, the CUS Grakara.

His enemies critized that his ruthless tactics costed too many lifes of his crew but somehow Rivet and his ship survived his daring battle-maneuvers.

Between 2369 and 2371 the CUS Grakara was the most successful Cardassian warship during the Maquis war. Although the small ships of the Maquis were no match for a Galor-warship the real problem for the Cardassians was to hunt the agile fighters down. Somehow Rivet was able to foresee the next moves of the Maquis in his patroling area. The CUS Grakara destroyed in these 3 years 21 Maquis raiders.

He even managed to fly with his Galor-warship through the very dangerous Badlands-territory in two cases while hunting down Maquis raiders.

In 2372 a civilian uprising deposed the military government. In their rage and fear of a counter-rebellion the new civilian rulers imprisoned or executed many high-ranking officers. So the Cardassian fleet lost in few weeks most of their experienced commanding officers.

Gul Rivet was also deposed and imprisoned. Although sentenced to death by a civilian jury ironicly the klingon invasion saved Rivets life.

The paniked civilians hesitated to kill experianced COs but they also didn´t released them. Instead the civilian Detapa-council started endless discussions about what to do, while the Klingons were marching deeper and deeper in Cardassian territory.

So a very frustrated Gul Rivet stayed in a prison camp and was informed about the catastrophical battle-results. Here he made contact to other (imprisoned) Guls, who 20 years later rised in the hierarchy and became important allies for Rivets political ambitions.

One year later - in 2373 - Gul Dukat ended this situation: He deposed the Detapa-council, installed a military-government under his leadership and signed an alliance with the Dominion.

The imprisoned officers, like Gul Rivet, were released and immediately put again in their ranks. Many cardassian ships had been lost during the war, but Rivet was lucky: "His" Grakara had survived the fightings.

Under command of Gul Rivet the Grakara destroyed with two other Galor-ships of the 5th Order in a surprise attack one Klingon Vor´Cha-cruiser and two klingon bird-of-preys without any own ship-losses.

Then the DCS Grakara was assigned to the attack-fleet against Deep-Space-Nine. Although this joint Jem-Hadar-Cardassian-attack, under the supreme command of Gul Dukat, was successful the losses were very high. The DCS Grakara had been heavily damaged and 30% of the crew died.

During the next months the ship has to be repaired at a space-dock and Rivet used the time to expand his political contacts within the military.

Then the Federation Alliance started their counter-attack: Terok-Nor was lost, Gul Dukat went mad and the Cardassian had to retreat back to their territory. In an attempt to get back the innitiative the commanding Founder arranged an alliance with the Breen.

Again the Dominion was in the offensive but the moral of the Cardassians became low, when the Dominion gave cardassian territory to the hated Breen and wasted cardassian soldiers in senseless operations.

Legate Damar, who had succeeded Dukat, seemed incompetent, when he surpisingly turned against the Dominion.

Although Rivet not openly sided to Damar he arranged that all the fleet forces of the 5th Order were under command of officers who trusted him.

When news reaches the fleet that Jem´Hadar-forces had destroyed the cardassian city of Lacarion-Prime as punishment for Damars action, Rivet hardly avoided an uncoordinated rebellion again the Dominion. Instead he managed that during the decisive battle between the Federation/Klingons/Romulans and the Dominion / Cardassian/Breen the ships of the 5th Order started to switch the side at one moment and the other cardassian ships followed.

The Dominion and Breen had to surrender and although Cardassia had not to be present at the capitulation-ceremony the Cardassian Union and Cardassia-Prime were badly damaged.

Rivet was shocked, when he saw the destructions the Jem Hadars had done to his beloved Cardassia-Prime.

In this desperate hour the military man Rivet started his political career. In a charismatic speach to the fleet he managed to raise the morale of his troops.

As expected a civilian council tried to reform the cardassian ruling system. Because of the covert opposition of the military this civilian government had no chance. Food transports to Cardassia-Prime arrived with delays and the endless debates of the Council enraged the starving population. Soon the people called for "law and order" and the "reaturation". The military supported the civilian uprising and the 2nd Detapa-Council was deposed and executed by an enraged mob.

Then the military intervened and rebuilt the Central Command. By plundering their own backwater colonies the Rivet and his partners managed to stop the starvation on Cardassia-Prime.

In 2380 Gul Rivet became Kaylan (admiral) and in 2385 Legate and officially member of the reinstalled Central Command.

It lasted 10 years until the Central Command could stabilize the Cardassian Union. All important colonies were brought under under control of the Central Command and even Cardassia-Prime was rebuilt.

After the inner problems were more or less solved Rivet had to face the fact that the Cardassian Union was not able to start a war against one of the main powers. Without recources the military had to upgrade old ship-designs, so the Galor-, Keldon- and Hideki-class are still dominating the Cardassian fleet.

They have improved weapons, but remain still no match for a modern battleship of the Romulans or the Federation.
